Copenhagen Metro line 4 - The impressive Copenhagen South station

københavn syd metro station

In June 2024, the Copenhagen Metro opened 5 new stations towards the south harbour. All new stations are characterized by unique artwork installations, while keeping the ease of passenger flow as for the previous stations. The job well done is inviting people not only to use the Metro as their daily preferred mean of transport, but also to do station-hopping and enjoy the impressive architecture.

The first station I visited during the inauguration day was Copenhagen South, the southern terminus of metro line 4 (initially named as Ny Ellebjerg, to be renamed prior to the opening to København Syd). The station consists of four levels:
  • The aboveground level/entrance area, closeby to bus, s-tog and suburban railway connections
  • The concourse level, with ticket vending and information panels
  • The intermediate level with direct close view to the station's artwork: the astroclock
  • The platform level for embarking/disembarking to the trains

The architectural showstopper of the station is the huge astronomic clock, art by Henrik Plenge Jakobsen. A truly impressive piece of art that is dynamically showing a precise picture of the sun, the moon and the current position of the planets above the station.
The astronomical clock is a whopping 4.4 meters high, and the planets are decorated with various metals and precious stones.

The overall aesthetics of the stations manage to give a warm, safe feeling to the passengers, while maintaining simplicity. Passing through the stations is a simple task, while your few seconds on the escalators are spent admiring the art. And by experience I can tell that this is applicable not only during the first, but during your 100+st time.

Copenhagen South is connected via metro directly to central Copenhagen stations, such as the central train station, Kongens Nytorv and Gammel Strand, in approximately 10 minutes, with frequent, 24/7 trains.
Checking out the stations, its art-pieces and the local neighborhoods is a definetely recommended fun activity for locals and tourists.
